Clad in an elegant, draped, goddess-style gown, Lauren Bacall paid tribute to her late husband, the screen legend Humphrey Bogart, as she accepted an early Oscar for a life-long career in film this weekend. The 85-year-old – seriously, how completely amazing does she look? – was given the award in advance of the official March ceremony to allow more time to showcase film nominations in next year’s event, and is one of the oldest stars to ever receive an Oscar.

The actress, who dominated the silver screen during the '40s and '50s in The Big Sleep, Dark Passage and How To Marry A Millionaire with her husky voice and sultry look, became an iconic figure in the movie industry as well as in the fashion world. And her distinctive style continues to this day. It was all about Bacall at Dior's spring '10 show in Paris; we watched model after model come out in red lipstick and sleek, finger-waved hair, as the sound of machine guns, sirens and screams rang through the air in the style of a true '40s thriller. The clothes themselves were also reminiscent of Bacall’s signature look, with luxurious chiffons and silks, sharp silhouettes and a blend of masculine/feminine that captured the empowered yet fragile film noir heroine perfectly (just think of Bacall's portrayal of Vivian Rutledge in The Big Sleep…). In short, we loved it and we love to see such a sophisticated and accomplished actress honoured in this way. Bravo Ms Bacall!
