No surprise that our favourite style stuntwoman Lady Gaga was the first woman in the world spotted rocking Alexander McQueen’s 10-inch Alien shoes from the designer’s spring 2010 collection (in the just-released video for her new track Bad Romance).
But Grazia is astonished to discover that even before Gaga debuted the shoes, Alexander McQueen has reported being inundated with calls from women wanting to order the footwear – starting from the day after the designer’s incredible catwalk show was streamed live on the web.
Now, we don’t know about you, but our first reaction on seeing the shoes was very much 'what?!' and then 'wow', but at no point did we starting thinking 'must get me a pair of those'. Unless you are, in fact, Lady Gaga, surely footwear this magically fantastical is not exactly top of your shopping list?
But hey, what do we know…'We've had lots of people showing great interest in the show shoes,' says a McQueen spokesperson, who reports that some of the callers are also looking 'to buy them as art pieces'. By all accounts, the shoes are an extraordinary feat of engineering: 'The process used to create the Alien shoes is very innovative and protected by copyright,' says McQueen’s spokesperson, creating a tantalising air of mystery around the footwear that is unlikely to reduce the number of calls.
Alexander McQueen is now trying to decide what will happen to the sample pairs that appeared on the catwalk. Our source reports 'We are considering organizing a charity auction as the best way to offer them to the public.' Grazia will have more information from the McQueen camp shortly.
In the meantime, may we recommend a nice, sensible pair of brogues?
