Lady Gaga may have her own 'couture house', the intriguingly Germanic sounding Haus of Gaga, which is responsible for many of her more bonkers ensembles (Kermit heads coat, anyone?), but lately we've noticed the singer has been turning more and more to established, if still edgy, designers to dress her for her endless public appearances. From this week’s Dolce & Gabbana black lace body suit to Jean Paul Gaultier’s surprisingly demure strapless little black dress.
Maybe this merely demonstrates the phenomenal influence of Gaga’s distinctive style on the current fashion scene, or maybe it just shows how hard the fashion world has fallen in love with the petite weirdo's ability to carry off their most fantastical catwalk creations, somehow making them seem relevant, sexy and cool.
Of course, if you want edgy creativity, Alexander McQueen is top of your shopping list. And so it was for Gaga's wardrobe for the astonishing new video for Bad Romance, currently causing a storm on the web (watch the video below). Gaga wears looks from the designer’s spring 2010 collection, including (wouldn’t you just know) those crazy 10-inch Armadillo shoes!
High-end designers have long been commissioned to create special stage costumes for music stars’ tour wardrobes. But we love seeing straight-from-the-catwalk looks worn in a context other than just the designer's own advertising campaign.
Beyoncé may have recently appeared as Sasha Fierce (her Gaga-esque alter ego) in vintage ’80s Thierry Mugler catwalk gear; featuring perspex car bodywork bodysuits (that she spotted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Superheroe’s exhibition).
But Gaga’s video represents another watershed moment for high fashion crossing over to the mainstream; reminiscent of when Patricia Field outfitted all the Sex And The City women in up-to- the-minute designer labels and the whole world suddenly realised this is what TV wardrobes had been crying out for.
Artistes may love a designer label, but only Gaga can grab the gear straight from the catwalk… Lady, we salute you.
