Daring or demure, this weekend saw a mix of it all. We spotted masculine jumpsuits and ultra-feminine gowns walking the red carpet but who will win the best dressed crown? You decide!
If you were planning on hitting the red carpet this weekend, a jumpsuit was certainly the coolest option. Just check out Diane Kruger who rarely misses a beat, whether she's glammed up in a gorgeous gown or looking casual chic as she did at the Behind The Camera Awards in Hollywood last night. Her all-in-one by Fendi gives the illusion that the actress is wearing a tailored suit with waist coat detailing but the plunging neckline and those sparkling Armani Privé heels add just the right amount of sexy. Fearne Cotton took one step further out of the fashion comfort zone by playing up to the masculine silhouette of her jumpsuit with a military inspired colour palette and lace-up boots. Although we have upmost respect for her bravery, we wish she’d added some sparkle or a bright lip to take her from grungy soldier on acid to the more feminine Fearne we know and love.
From her chic bob to her enviable accessories, Ginnifer Goodwin has locked down the refined look and her grey lace Chanel Resort dress certainly helps too. Although it could make the young actress look frumpy - especially with her mature hair cut and that unique train pinned at the front - she managed to pull it off with an air of 1920s chic. Eva Mendes also went down the classic lady-like route with her Donna Karan Resort ensemble and looked très sophisticated all in monochrome, especially after last week’s dazzling sparkler. Here’s hoping the low-cut shirt didn’t flash anything other than her beaded choker...
Lady G also opted for a quirky take on the playsuit, causing the usual style sensation with this dramatic tent-like design that stuck out at 90-degree angles. And if that wasn’t bonkers enough, she teamed it with a pair of oversized sunnies (very weather appropriate, in mid-November) and OTK PVC boots for an added ounce of crazy. Elsewhere in the world, Katie Holmes was somewhat more modestly dressed when she attended the Stage Directors And Choreographers Society 50 Year Celebration in New York. Although her midnight blue strapless frock had flattering ruched detailing and those heels are pretty mega, we were forced to stifle a yawn when we saw this one...
Now, Zoe Saldana is one star who can get away with a simple ensemble without inducing the snooze-factor. As the epitome of less is more, this tweed shift creates the perfect hourglass figure thanks to its structured bodice and large pockets that flare out at an angle. Speaking of figure flatterers, step in Zooey Deschanel who can always be relied upon to embrace feminine fashion in a big way. Her Karen Walker halter-neck frock with ruffled layers and a colour popping belt to enhance the illusion of a teeny waist proves that she’s become quite the pro at mastering kooky girly cool. Take note, ladies.
These girls proved that LBDs will continue to rule the red carpet this season but when said dress has a sexy turtle neck and glistening cut-away panel like Christina Ricci's Marios Schwab number, you’re in for a surefire treat. And with that strong lip and blunt fringe, the look is kept perfectly modern. Kristen Stewart also sizzled in style courtesy of her D&G ruched cocktail dress with corset lacing for a touch of sexy, although her studded Jimmy Choo heels stayed true to her trademark rock-chick vibe.
