Last week we took a trip to New York to check out what Banana Republic has in store for us come spring 2010. The show was staged in a stark industrial building - the Cedar Lake Dance Company’s rehearsal space in the Chelsea district of the city and as the rain poured down and the winds howled outside we got a taste of what the Banana Republic girl will be wearing next season.
We caught up with Banana Republic’s Creative Director, British born Simon Kneen before the show to talk through the collection and his inspiration for spring. “This season we have revisited the the whole sportswear legacy of the Banana Republic heritage” he told us “and really focused on blue denim too”. The collection indeed had not only actual denim (worn head to toe, which looked fresh) but also chambray and silk pieces in denim blue shades. “I love the big skies we have here in America - you just don’t seem to see them elsewhere – that influenced the colour palette I have used this season”. Clothes had a distinctly loved look, slightly worn in and rumpled, nothing too pristine, “We focused on texture in this collection, using broken down looking fabrics. Some of them even have metal in them to give them that permanent laundered look.’ Kneen told us. Sadly we’ll all have to wait until January to get our hands on the collection, but it’s never to early for a spot of wardrobe planning. Here are a few of the things we loved most…
· Head to toe denim – sounds wrong, but looked great.
· The chambray trench coat that Abby Lee wore to open the show.
· The Khaki bomber jacket in washed leather – the perfect weekend throw on.
· The khaki weekend chino – nobody does them better than BR. These will look great with converse or heels.
