If there’s one thing that Pearl Lowe knows about, it’s partying (seriously, have you read her autobiography All That Glitters?).
So who better to launch a range of party dresses? Lowe says designing the collection for Peacocks (yes, Peacocks) has been 'a bit of a dream - I’m very proud of the designs and can’t wait to see them on the high street. It was important from the start that my designs were accessible and everything is under £40.’
Lowe has always had a sharp eye for a great dress (a top vintage dealer once told Grazia ‘there are only two women who can really rock those Forties frocks and make them look modern – Kate Moss and Pearl Lowe’), and so it’s not surprising when Pearl tells us she has used her own to-die-for wardrobe as a starting point for the designs: “The red lace tea dress was based on a beautiful long vintage gown I found online five years ago.”
Lace is something of a signature fabric for Lowe (we’re still coveting some of her gorgeous lace curtains) and she tells Grazia that her foolproof party outfit is ‘a black lace dress, black opaque tights and killer heels. And my mother gave me a beautiful quilted classic Chanel bag which makes every party outfit look sensational. It really is a timeless piece.'
Of course the collection is very Pearl, with a vintage, rocky vibe: ‘I’ve taken inspiration from the things I love, classic vintage shapes, intricate detail, lace and wonderful textiles’ and the former Britpop singer says she was also influenced by Bowie’s iconic Hunky Dory album, which can be seen in Pearl’s favourite piece from the collection ‘the black jersey dress with angel sleeves’, which is unmistakably Bowie – although possibly less David and more Angie Bowie, his rock-chick wife.
And if you were Pearl, why wouldn’t you get your model daughter to appear in the ads? ‘Daisy has amazingly long legs so looks great in minis' says Pearl proudly 'since I hit 35 I’ve stuck to knee-length for everything!’
Seems Daisy was happy to oblige: 'Ever since I was a little girl I’ve dressed up in my mum’s clothes; she’s my style icon and her new designs capture her spirit and style. It’s great that everyone will have the chance to plunder mum’s wardrobe this Christmas.'
Sounds good to us – but can she get us into any parties?
The collection of five Christmas party dresses will land in selected Peacocks stores nationwide on 2 November, retailing for £35 to £40 and available in sizes 8 to 16.
