Genius casting: Angelina Jolie is set to portray the notoriously ambitious fashionista wife of Maurizio Gucci in a new film about the rise, fall and rise again of the Gucci empire. Director Ridley Scott (of Thelma and Louise and Gladiator fame) is said to be in talks with Miss Jolie about playing the role of the woman who was famously convicted for arranging the gunning down of her husband in 1995.
Founded in 1921 by Guccio Gucci, the multi billion dollar fashion company was renowned for heated and passionate family arguments (including one that allegedly involved the throwing of an answering machine - tres Naomi) over everything from inheritance to store management and the development of the business. Maurizio, Guccio’s grandson, took over Gucci in 1983, before being forced off the Board of Directors a decade later, during which time he also divorced his wife. Dwindling divorce settlement payments were said to be the reason why Patrizia conspired to arrange his murder in 1995 (the previous year, a young designer called Tom Ford, who since 1990 had been working behind the scenes under Maurizio on the women’s ready to wear, was promoted to chief designer).
All sounds very Dirty Sexy Money to us, and therefore a brilliant plot for a film! Leonardo Di Caprio has apparently been approached about playing the part of Maurizio, and we reckon the two actors would be perfect, especially feisty Angelina who bares a sultry resemblance to the beautiful Patrizia, who once uttered the immortal line 'I’d rather cry in a Rolls-Royce, than laugh on a bicycle.' We're looking forward to hearing about the rest of the cast. But more importantly, who will get the delicious job of being in charge of costumes? Can't wait to see Angelina rocking vintage Gucci.
