OK, we were excited about his Oscar prospects, but now Tom Ford has finally confirmed that he will be launching a womenswear line, so we feel like all our Christmases have come at once.

Ford said last night in Tokyo that he will be returning to designing womenswear, and is planning to launch the Tom Ford brand’s first women’s collection 'very soon'.

Speculation has been spreading like wildfire among industry insiders ever since the former Gucci and YSL creative director (and his long-term business partner Domenico de Sole) first started looking for finance – allegedly a whopping $50 million - for the project. Industry sources have suggested that he is intending to debut the line as early as autumn ’10 (which would mean the collection would hit the catwalk in February 2010!).

But last night Ford was reluctant to confirm a date for the debut. 'You know it will take me 18 months when I start, because [I have] to hire the team, find the factories, put everything together and then get the stores ready so there’s a place for these clothes,' Ford told fashion industry bible WWD. 'Financing is extremely expensive right now, so if we find financing in the right situation we’ll be able to start [a women’s collection] soon. If we don’t, we may have to wait a while.'

In the meantime, Ford’s name continues to carry massive cachet – his menswear line remains a smash hit despite the recession, which may explain Ford’s remarkable patience about the launch of his womenswear. 'I’m optimistic and this is something that I plan on doing for the next 30 years of my life,' said the designer, 'so if I have to wait another six months or a year, it’s OK.'

Grazia is delighted that it’s now a case of when, not if, the label launches, but we can’t wait for this to happen!

For anyone else who's finding it a difficult wait, we’ve compiled a gallery of pics of Mr Ford’s greatest fashion hits (so far…)
