‘It’s terrible, the only time I attend church these days are for fashion shows or parties’ – we heard from one sinner as we entered the stunning Christ Church in Spitalfields in East London for the party to celebrate the new issue of Acne Paper which has a spirituality theme. We were greeted on the steps of the 18th Century church by handsome boys all trussed up in black tie, and it was a taster of the decadence inside. Twinkling candles (electric but you’d never know it) were imported from China especially for the evening, created a romantic atmosphere, and Katerina Jebb’s Video piece featuring Crystallized Swarovski elements added a further bling edge in the imposing interior. And of course it was packed to the alter with an imposingly dressed fashion crowd (many in Acne of course), all enjoying the Absolut Vodka cocktails – in fact they were enjoyed a little bit too much by some revellers, who were relieved at the door of the bottles they tried to take home as souveniers! The Klaxons, The Kooks, Tallulah Adeyemi, Lois Winstone, Nat Weller, Michelle Jank and Jonny Woo were just some of the 600+ guests treated to a mind-blowing, but thankfully not crystal-shattering, performance by Gospel singer, Samantha Smith, who jammed along to Mimi who dj’d in the rafters. Acne’s Jonny Johansson flew in for the evening from Sweden, even though his wife is due to give birth imminently to their third son, ‘I’m going to start a boy band,’ he joked! As the crowd rolled out into the dark streets of Spitalfields, some remarked that they would love to return to the church during its working hours, but we imagine no one made it for morning service the next day!
