Philippe Naouri, or the “Vintage Denim King” as he’s known among fashionistas, became obsessed with denim at 15 and hasn’t looked back. As he launches his new line Vintage 1 the French designer, who co-founded denim empire Antik Denim with Alexandre Caugaunt, tells Grazia Daily how to work the biker look, about his obsession with Keira Knightley, and what to expect from his new label.

GD: Philippe, you’re the brain behind new denim brand, Vintage 1 – how did the brand get started?

Philippe: When I left Antik I wanted to create a new brand. Four years ago I designed a motorcycle pant that nobody wanted. Last year I realised that it was the right time to re-introduce this style as there was a desire for something fresh and new.

GD: We’ve been told to expect plain and distressed motorcycle chic denim – can you tell us a bit more about the range? How much of a move is it from your vintage classic Western-esque pieces?

Philippe: The plain motorcycle jean is an everyday style and the more distressed styles are for the rock ‘n’ roll minded and fashion forward. Every designer feels different trends so western was a trend and motorcycle is a new one.

GD: You’re renowned for the quality of your work – is this something that we can expect from Vintage 1?

Philippe: I always use the best Italian & Japanese denim. That’s why my jeans have great washes and comfort. I only use the best, it’s very important!

GD: Were you pleased to spot A-listers like Rihanna and Cameron Diaz wearing Vintage 1?

Philippe: Yes, it’s very exciting to see them wearing it.

GD: What does this mean for Antik Denim – is it being put on the back burner while you develop Vintage 1?

Philippe: I am still currently working with Antik Denim. However the concept has changed slightly – styles are more urban and they have introduced more men’s styles to the collection.

GD: We love the idea of biker-style denim! What are your style tips for wearing the biker look well?

Philippe: For the ultimate biker look you need a pair of killer heels and a classic cut box jacket.

GD: Are there any celebrities you think do the biker look particularly well?

Philippe: I think the biker look pretty much suits all fashionistas. You have to feel comfortable with the look to carry it off.

GD: What are you obsessed with at the moment?

Philippe: I am obsessed with a vintage Patek Philippe watch and I think that Keira Knightley is the most beautiful girl in world. I also love architecture, especially work by John Lautner.

GD: What’s the one thing every girl should have this autumn?

Philippe: A great cashmere scarf is always good to have.
