When Grazia’s editor-at-large, Melanie Rickey, who can usually be found inhabiting a series of sleek black layers, suddenly appears in the office carrying something very pink and very sparkly, you know it’s a sign that there’s about to be a Major Shift in your look.
We’ll be honest, the first time we saw Mel’s Pauric Sweeney snakeskin bag and it’s beyond-Barbie pinkness there maaay have been little bit of teasing (working on a magazine in no way protects you from getting your gear sneered at). But Mel is having the last laugh.
Single-handedly spearheading the backlash against the black-with-studs bag uniform here at the magazine, Mel says, 'I was looking for the jazziest bag I could find. Because I wear all-black, I think it just gives my look a bit of personality...' (helps if you’ve got a matching Stephen Sprouse for Louis Vuitton scarf too, eh?)
The bag debuted at London Fashion Week and met with mixed reviews. 'All the fashionistas were turning their noses up, looking at it really disdainfully, but the snappers kept stopping me.'
It’s not unusual for our editor-at-large to be ahead of the curve, and the bag has spookily worked its way into the affections of the Grazia staffers (one of whom just told me she now talks to the bag instead of Mel’s face, because she is so mesmerised by it).
Of course, Mel fell in love with it weeks ago. 'There’s something magical about it, because it is so ridiculously girly. But it’s so handy, it has three pockets inside. And it ages really well, so I don’t feel bad banging it about. I literally haven’t stopped carrying it.'
The bag retails at £1,710 and is available at Liberty, Harvey Nichols, Start, Browns and Larizia
