At Roland Mouret’s studio in the Paris (the kind of area where we passed by drunk homeless men spitting at each other in the street) all was serene. Models were having their fittings, fresh fruit was being consumed, and Roland was talking us through his big news for the new SS10 season. He wasn’t just talking clothes. His show is being specially filmed for online consumption. Though he did tell us about how this season he has created the ultimate foundation garment. A structured power-mesh dress in skin-tone pink with a zip all the way up the side that he says is “the Spanx pant idea revisualised.” Essentially, he has created the ultimate compressing and releasing garment, as desired no doubt by a red-blooded male, who is repulsed by the idea of peeling Spanx of f his lover. With this foundation garment, he will have much more fun. And on top of this wondrous power-mesh garment are placed elegant tabards, loose dhoti pants, sexy slim signature Roland dresses, and shaggy tailored jackets to give the overall look both elegant looseness and taut siren appeal.
More interesting was the designer's talk on his show tomorrow. “I am working with new technology because I want to change the way I work. I have been doing this catwalk routine for coming up to two decades, and I don’t see myself carrying on for another ten years in the same way. I want to look at new ways of doing things.” Roland is working with Scottish technology company MorphicMedia to create his fashion show online, but the difference is this will not be the show as those present will view it. “There are 28 cameras positioned around the venue, behind the stage, even on a model. So in the end, the viewer on line will be able to see the show in any of hundreds of thousdands of combinations. You can see the show through the models' eyes, what is going on backstage, or from Anna Wintour’s seat if you want,” he says. Pretending we're Anna Wintour while watching an RM by Roland Mouret show? Amazing.
The Spring 2010 collection from RM by Roland Mouret will shown in Paris tomorrow (Wednesday). The collection can be viewed online from 14th October at fashionair.com
