STELLA: Dad's money helped me

She may have had to do a Saturday job to earn pocket money like any other teenager while at school, but the reality is her father is one of the richest men in the world (he’s currently thought to be worth approximately £440 million). And today, Stella McCartney has admitted that her privileged background has helped give her freedom in her fashion career. 'The greatest luxury of having the parents I had was that it has enabled me not to have to compromise,' she says in today’s Guardian. 'In the back of my mind, I always knew – if this all goes horribly wrong, I'll be alright. That's an option that most people just don't have, financially.'

Fortunately, these days, things are going very right for the designer. This week, Stella McCartney Limited, (which is co-owned by The Gucci Group) revealed that profits rose by 78 per cent last year, despite the recession. Stella is definitely having a moment – and the designer, who launched her label in 2001, says she now knows she has found her signature style. 'Things got better when I started being more true to myself. I like doing slightly masculine, Savile Row tailoring. A nice jacket. Wearable – it's almost a dirty word in fashion, wearable, but that's what I do. And yeah, it can get a bit boring, but I can push it each season into something better and more relevant for that season.'

Her Paris Fashion Week catwalk show this morning featured sexy, womanly one-shoulder tops and dresses, and cool A-line denim skirts. Didn’t look boring to us, Stella…
