Superdogels on the Catwalk!

Mulberry

Mulberry has been doing its bit towards Caryn Franklin and Erin O Connor’s initiative to promote diversity on the catwalks, by featuring erm, pugs.

Meet, Gladys and Matilda, London’s very own ‘superdogels’. The sleek black pugs modelled Mulberry’s Spring Summer 2010 collection at Claridges earlier this week.

“Gladys is a superstar model who only walks for special events,” Brix Smith-Start, Gladys’ owner-agent told Grazia. “She’s like a Ming vase, absolute perfection.” Like Lara Stone, Gladys is known for her fabulous limbs and unusual walk "Gladys' legs are so long and slinky, although she slouches sometimes. She was in her element on the catwalk and was the most relaxed model.."

Gladys was ‘re-signed’ to model for the label for the second year running, alongside Matilda, Mulberry’s in-house model and muse for the label’s doggy couture (as well as being a friend of a friend of one of the staffers).

In the past, the rival models have been known to get a little heated backstage (so much so that they have been nicknamed ‘Tyra’ and ‘Naomi’). "Matilda and Gladys hated each other last year" admits Brix, saying “we had to separate them and put Matilda in another room while Gladys was on the runway as they kept cat-fighting”. But like Naomi and Tyra, we’re pleased to report, the pair have now made up, “they shared the limelight this year and got on brilliantly."

Like all the hottest models of the season, Gladys and Matilda were also spotted sitting in the FROW at several shows later that day. Gladys even went to the Mulberry after party, “I think the whole thing's gone to her head a bit” admits Brix.

But in fashion, attitude pays off. The original supermodels may have refused to wake up for less than $10, 000 a day, but Gladys’ diva demands are a little more fashion focused – including some gorgeous Mulberry collars and leads, and even better, Brix bragged to us that, naturally, as Gladys’ agent, she also received a fee; a black Electra bag with black python trim. Not bad for a day’s work!
