Victoria Beckham could probably get front-row tickets to any catwalk show at London Fashion Week (or, let’s face it, anywhere). But today it was a low-key presentation for Fashion East, a catwalk showcase of three up-and-coming designers, that she chose to attend. Victoria told Grazia she was at the show because she’d ‘heard there is really exciting talent coming out of Fashion East’. Immaculately dressed in one of her own designs from S/S 2010 – a pale grey tailored dress with a square cut-out neckline – she watched from the front row as next-big-thing designers showed their collections. ‘I just couldn’t believe she was there,’ said Fashion East’s director Lulu Kennedy. ‘I wanted to pinch her to check she was real.’
Lulu says the show was recommended to Victoria by some of her fashion editor friends. ‘I think they told her, “If you’re doing any shows, go to Fashion East, it will give you a sense of the young London underground designers.” Also, I just think she felt she wanted to get behind the British Fashion Council for the 25th anniversary of London Fashion Week, and she decided she wanted to support young talent here.’ The young talent in today’s show were Holly Fulton (‘really full-on art deco prints,’ according to Kennedy), Heikki Salonen (‘really uber low-key, quite minimalist, a bit like ’90s Helmut Lang’) and – the name on everyone’s lips this season – Michael van der Ham (‘really dreamy, girly desirable gowns’).
Kennedy says the woman behind The Collection by Victoria Beckham was impressed with her fellow designers. 'I think she really liked Holly’s stuff. So who knows, maybe we’ll be seeing her in a bit of Fashion East before too long…’
