London Fashion Week has kicked off and to celebrate, Grazia's fashion editor-at-large Melanie Rickey is visiting designers' studios to see how they're preparing for their Spring/Summer 2010 shows.
Thursday 17 September 2009: House of Holland
'We’re going to a wedding,' said Henry, excitedly as he pointed to his board of show looks. 'Huh?' I said. 'This season, we’re going to a wedding. The show is a wedding. And the collection is all about what she wears, all the choices she has got of clothes to wear to said wedding.' Aha. OK. Sounds like a plan. Sure enough, when I look closely at the board I can see a series of cutely sexy tailored dresses; a peplum here, a playsuit there, a skirt-suit over there that would indeed be perfect for a wedding, if you were the cool sister/cousin/best friends of the bride or groom. We’re in Henry’s new studio in east London. 'Everyone thought I was in East London already, when I was always in the centre of town. So I decided to move, and I love it.' Indeed his space is twice the size of his former tiny studio, and while visiting there are several things happening at once – a hair and make-up test, his stylist Sam is planning the show, and there are machinists running up the special piece in collaboration with Levi's, which will also be going on general sale across the country for next spring. Henry is laughing to himself, as he has got a new best-selling item in his business – the tights he created with Pretty Polly. Selfridges pre-sold 1,000 pairs of them!
For S/S '10, Henry wants to be about more than tights and T-shirts, he wants to be about pale denim with buckles, lace dresses, colour (orange, lime green, mauve, pale blue) and funny jumper dresses with holes where the boobs are. He is also rather into the flesh tones. But we shall say no more until the show... we don’t want to give the whole thing away. Oh and who will his bride be – will the lovely Agy be flying in? Agy hasn’t missed a House of Holland show yet. 'That is still TBC,' he said with a tiny bit of a sad face. After all, they make such a lovely couple! Henry's show is on Monday night.
