Dries Van Noten is the kind of label that, once you discover it, it is hard to wear anything else. It has obsessive fans who treat the clothes like art and the designer (that’s Mr Van Noten to us) like a God…sort of. So they will be delighted to learn that yesterday he was honoured with the Couture Council Artistry of Fashion Award, at a glam luncheon at Cipriani in New York. Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, who was resplendent in the A/W ’09 collection, presented him with the award and she gushed lovingly about her ‘favourite designer’; ‘I'm a huge fan of Dries' clothes. I love them. I wear them all the time. I felt like he's given me so many beautiful clothes and designed things for me and I really wanted to give something back to him.’ She also told a story about how Dries designed her wedding dress, but when it arrived it was nothing like she had described. But rather than throw a hissy fit and demand a new dress (or perhaps she omitted that from the tale), instead she left it in the box and tried it on again a week later, only to love it. ‘It's like he knows better than I do what is beautiful and sexy on me!’ Other guests included Daphne Guinness, who let anyone who asked smell her new scent, and Iman, who revealed that she won’t be attending any fashion shows this season. And while Dries didn’t give any clues as to what he is planning for his Paris show, there are bound to be many of his fans hanging from the rafters, desperate for a first look. We’ll be amongst them!
