Manolo disses Sex And The City!

Doubtless, there is currently some kind of unholy scramble among fashion designers to ensure that their clothes get into the wardrobes of the lead actresses in hotly-anticipated movie Sex And The City 2 (see today’s Grazia for an exclusive story on the cool new label that is the first to be worn by Carrie Bradshaw). We can only imagine the bribes, the tears, the deals, the anguish and the celebrations that the movie’s stylist, Patricia Field, must be encountering (btw, how is that not a fly-on-the-wall doc yet?). Who wouldn’t want their merch to feature on the world’s most hyped, most glamorous, most full-on fashion film?

Manolo Blahnik, that’s who. Carrie Bradshaw might be the most famous fan of Blahnik’s shoes, but, shockingly, it seems the shoe designer is no longer a fan of SATC. According to website Contactmusic, Blahnik has said ‘..if people talk to me about Sex And The City, I get sick. The taxi drivers recognise me now. It becomes too much and I don't feel comfortable. I have never wanted to be a celebrity designer.’

But he does admit that the movie helped boost his company’s fortunes. Referring to the royal blue satin Manolo Blahniks that played a pivotal role in last year's movie (the shoes helped Carrie feel at home in her new apartment, and even brought Big and Carrie back together), he said, ‘well, we had a very good year last year, thanks to those stupid satin shoes. That shoe saved our company.’ We have a feeling Carrie won’t have to give up her favourite shoe addiction just yet...

  • But Mr Blahnik. Isn't that a photo of you at the SATC film premiere?! So much for incognito...

  • Mmm, a case of 'don't bite the hand that feeds you' comes to mind. I was shopping at a certain Nottingham based designer's store in SoHo NY in April when Ms Field rang up, apparently sourcing suits for Big. I know that the designer's artwork was in the first movie.

  • Blahnik sounds like a petulant indie star who moans that he never gets time alone now he's famous. Honestly give over.

  • I wrote about this on my blog yesterday: http://www.shoezodiac.com/is-blahnik-for-real/. But after having slept on it, "methinks thou dost protest too much." As the Grazie writer points out, designers are falling over themselves to get their wares into the movie...and WHO is getting all the press? Uh,huh. Mr. Blahnik.
