Acne know how to put on a show. On Tuesday night we arrived at the Barbican for a preview of their S/S ’10 collection (yes, yes, not even in winter, but we’re already thinking about next summer – can you blame us?), with no idea what to expect. We entered a black curved room, lit only by screens by art photographer Katerina Jebb, playing footage of a giant Swarovski crystal being scanned by a giant photocopier. It was a clue of things to come. As the room wound down to the end, we were greeted by a static group of models wearing the new collection. We know we were there to preview it but, to be honest, we all started writing our first shopping list. Fringed suede jackets, crystal-printed silk trousers, elegant column dresses (skirts are going long, ladies), edgy tailoring and, of course, jeans. But not just any jeans, jeans complete with silver armour, thanks to a partnership with jeweller and illustrator Husam El Odeh. They are easily going to be the most-photographed denim of 2010.
Acne is going from strength to strength – from being a cult label, to the coolest one in town. Fans include Ben Grimes, Liv Tyler, Alexa Chung, Kirsten Dunst and Kylie Minogue – who turned up on her own for a peek at Acne S/S ’10 and happily chatted with Acne founder Jonny Johansson. Plus, Henry Holland is so obsessed that he Twittered about it constantly for a week. And, judging by this new collection, Acne will also be our biggest obsession of next year.
