Grazia Daily just met Matthew Williamson for breakfast at Claridge's (tough job, hey?) to check out his new Butterfly collection for Debenhams (BTW, it’s in stores nationwide from today). Of course, us being us, we couldn’t help but find out what he'd been up to this bank holiday weekend – which, for Matthew, included a pool party at Shoreditch House. In case you were wondering what to wear to a pool party in London’s East End, the answer is ‘a vintage top hat, beige Diesel trousers and a Lanvin beaded T shirt’.
But it wasn’t all glamour. Naturally, the designer was glued to X Factor come Saturday night. ‘That girl from Tobago [Rozelle Phillips] really got to me… I love the story about her grandmother and she could really sing.’ Was he crying? ‘I may have had a dewy eye,’ he laughs! Of course, this week’s episode was extra-exciting for the designer. ‘Cheryl Cole was wearing one of my dresses – a little white cashmere shift with beading. I knew she’d borrowed it, but you still never know until you see the show. She knows what looks good on her and she’s always so gorgeous.’
We wanted the lowdown on his plans for his return to LFW, so what can we expect for his spring 2010 mainline collection? ‘A stronger silhouette, with more graphic prints, more tailored than perhaps you would expect to see at one of my summer shows – it’s not going to be diaphanous dresses.' So more Leigh than Sienna? 'I guess you could say that, but Sienna is now dressing harder and tougher and tailored, and it really suits her.’
Leigh is of course Matthew’s latest muse (and Grazia Daily’s girl crush du jour), American model and DJ Leigh Lezark. We're sooo hoping she might be jetting in for his London show, or better yet, to perform with her DJ collective the Misshapes at his after-party (after all, Prince played on MW's catwalk last season; quite a tough act to follow). Sadly, Matthew's long time friend Sienna can’t make it over as she's rehearsing for her Broadway show. (But will she make an appearance the day after for her own Twenty8Twelve show, we couldn’t help but wonder…)
We reckon Cheryl, Sienna and Leigh should also check out the designer's Butterfly collection at Debenhams: studded tailored dresses, denim treggings, leather biker jackets, and prices starting at £20 for the shiny black leggings (although, of course, we want the top-of-the range sequinned Ziggy dress for £285). Check back tomorrow morning for our exclusive video of Matthew talking through his favourite pieces from the range.
