Styling tips of the week!

26 August 2009

Volume, sharp shoulders, lace and leather… We’re spoilt for choice trend wise at the moment. But after much fashion analysis, we’ve narrowed down our three favourites. (For this week, at least). Here, Grazia’s Shopping Editor Sophie Ferguson Jones dissects who’s doing them well and why.

Crop tops
Yes, we’re with you. We’ve been umming and ahh-ing here for months now about whether or not la crop is eek or chic. But now the summer is coming to a close we’ve finally grasped the concept! There are two options. One, team them with a high-waisted bottom half (Rihanna does it expertly) which will expose the most flattering part of the tummy, leaving no room for love handles thank you very much. Or, layer your crop top with a lace body or long sleeve top to show off the silhouette a la Sienna Miller. Our top tip? Opt for a trapeze shape to create the illusion of a slimmer waist line.

Always a mega trend for the autumn/winter season, we’ve picked up on a more subtle way of styling lace up this time – by using trims to flash your lace. Stella McCartney used a simple slip dress with a lace hem for evening which will also work with your chunky knit for day. Phoebe Carlyle has done some great ones as seen on Net-a-Porter (or M&S do a great one for the budget conscience), and Balenciaga dressed lace up with a flash of a bra, which will work well paired with a racer back or low side vest.

Draped jackets
In last week’s Grazia we brought you the shape and drape dress, and now we are taking it one step further with jackets and gilets. Inspired by Rick Owens, these asymmetric cuts are bang on trend and look great flung over anything from a girlie tee to a rocking pair of jeans. Our faves are these pewter and khaki tones from Warehouse and All Saints.
