When Beth Ditto met Karl Lagerfeld…

24 August 2009

We can’t imagine Beth Ditto being intimidated. This is the woman who’s taken the fashion world by storm – landing front covers of fashion tomes, designing her own high street collection and being hand-picked by Karl Lagerfeld to entertain the fashion crowd at last Paris Fashion Week. But it seems Beth had more than a few qualms about meeting the Monsieur of French fashion. ‘I never knew what resistance was really like until I entered the mainstream. When you are in a punk scene and everybody around you thinks like you, talks like you and walks like you and you have the same ideology, that sort of resistance doesn't exist. It is much more dangerous to be a feminist and stand in front of Karl Lagerfeld and look him in the eye. That felt like resistance far more than being at a punk show full of people who already know about politics and feminism.’ But despite finding being face to face with Karl Lagerfeld, ‘one of the most challenging things I have ever done’ (we’re not surprised, Beth – what do you wear to meet the Kaiser?), she hopes it’ll inspire others to think they can be embraced by the notoriously insular fashion industry. ‘If there are two people that feel excited that it could be them in five or 10 or 15 years, that matters to me.’ Good job, Beth.
