When we met George Davies!

George Davies

When you think fashion power players, George Davies is front of mind. The founder of Next, George at Asda and M&S’s Per Una, he’s had three decades of success in womenswear. So when George asked myself and Grazia Editor-in-Chief Jane Bruton to meet him to discuss his next project GIVe I was a bit nervous. He’s a ‘big boy’ in terms of retailing. But what became quickly apparent was that he was more nervous than us about telling the GIVe story. His fourth brand – and first stand-alone retail concept – is all about affordable luxury and customer service. It’s being rolled out across the UK and online next month and from what we’ve seen it’s set to be a major new fixture on the British high street. So we found it amusing that he was so worried about showing us the mocked up ‘look book’ we practically had to bully him to go out and get it from his car to show us. Ten minutes later he came back, but not before he’d had a cigarette to calm himself down! In the end his fears were unfounded. We loved the collection almost as much as George himself. It was impossible not to warm to him as he asked as many questions of us as we did of him. We can’t tell you much more about GIVe just yet – but watch this space because it’s the most exciting story to come out of retail this year. And we’ll be bringing you the inside track...
