My Fashionable Week: Hermione de Paula

21 August 2009

Hermione de Paula

For Central Saint Martins graduate Hermione de Paula, things are looking pretty rosy right now. She’s just been chosen as part of the Vauxhall Fashion Scout line-up, and her new-season collection is sure to be one of the hottest to hit the catwalks come September. So we took five with the designer to talk Titanic, high heels, and why she likes Mondays…

Best moment of the week?
I'm still so excited to hear that I have been chosen to show at Vauxhall Fashion Scout’s ‘One’s to Watch’ initiative. It will be incredible to show at their new venue, the Freemasons' Hall in Covent Garden. I think this season will be great, as so many designers are returning to the schedule, and this will bring a lot of new excitement to the week’s events.

Worst moment of the week?
Worst moment was my photocopier breaking, but the silver lining was finding my missing lipgloss down the back of it whilst fixing it!

Is there anything like an average day for you, and if so what does it look like?
I normally arrive at my studio at around 8am and spend the morning working through my emails while the studio is quiet. At around 10am I begin work on the creative side of things, developing prints, directing my pattern cutters and also setting the rest of my team to work when they arrive. In the run up to the show I am working hard to perfect hand embellishments and show-pieces. If I’m lucky I’ll leave in time to have a quick dinner with my boyfriend before I fall asleep on my laptop, when the day ends at around 2am!

What's the most unexpected thing you did this week?
Watched Titanic on an old VCR, on the top deck of a boat under the stars with lots of wine….

How do you wind down at the end of the day?
Walking my puppy Edward the fox-dog in the park after dinner.

Guiltiest pleasure of the week?
Over indulging at a BBQ by a lake at the weekend.

Last three things you bought?
I paid for my printed fabrics, Riri zippers, a taxi ride.

What are you lusting over this week?
I am lusting after some embellishments for my S/S ‘10 collection – which will make up accessories – that I am shipping over from America at great expense!

What newspapers/magazines/websites do you look at each week?
Grazia (of course) Susiebubble, A Shaded View On Fashion, The Buisness of Fashion, and a favourite is Google images… Dazed Digital is also great, they recently featured my A/W '09 collection video. In the meantime I am channelling my creativity into my own blog, where you can find my news, musings and the occasional picture of my puppy!

Favourite outfit you wore this week?
People joke that I am never without a pair of skyscraper heels, even in the most impractical scenarios. So a favourite outfit this week began with a pair of six-inch Dior printed heels, teamed with a pair of pale denim high-waisted leggings, with a seam down the front. I wore this with a Breton striped T-shirt: both of which were vintage finds. Over the top I wore a piece from my A/W collection, a draped wool blazer with looped leather embellishments.

What's your favourite day of the week and why?
Bizarrely, I’m quite into Mondays right now. This is probably because as the week draws to a close I start to panic about all the work that still needs to be done!

What's your perfect day ever?
Ticking off the ‘list’ at the studio... and, at some point, a sexy new pair of shoes and palm trees should feature!

Soundtrack of the week?
My boyfriend has his music studio in our home, so his band Babe Shadow dominate the audiowaves. I am also in the process of creating a soundtrack for my S/S 2010 catwalk show, so a diverse mix of music is being can be heard at my studio.

Best restaurant/party/bar you've hung out in?
When I had a spare moment I caught up with friends at the Dalston Superstore over Margaritas before watching Coco Avant Chanel. It’s the perfect location as the atmosphere is relaxed, and its only two minutes from my studio. It reminds me of my time after work in LA, hanging out in the East Side having frozen margaritas by the bucket!

TV programme you were obsessed with?
I haven’t had time to watch too much TV, although when I do indulge I like watching E entertainment and VH1 for some celebrity titillation. I tend to watch films, I love David Lynch and the old black and white movies with fancy dresses.

What are you most looking forward to next week?
My prints arriving back from overseas, which means we can start sewing up the final collection and all hell breaks loose at the studio getting everything ready in time for the show!

BlackBerry or iPhone, and how addicted are you?
Sadly, I just have a very basic phone from the market that switches off mid-conversation. But have just been given a BlackBerry for keeping up to date with emails as I missed everything if I left the side of my computer. Now I just need to figure out how to use it!
