Haider Ackermann to take over at Margiela?

Maison Martin Margiela Haider Ackermann

There have been rumours spinning around fashion insiders since February that Martin Margiela had left his eponymous label, and another designer had been put at the helm of the cult label. Margiela is notoriously private – no one even knows what he looks like – so there were never any confirmations or denials of the story, just silence, as has been the label’s stance on many stories. But today new rumours are afoot that Haider Ackermann is to take over at Maison Martin Margiela, which is now owned by the Diesel group (which also owns Sophia Kokosalaki and DSquared). Haider has operated under the radar in Paris for many years, building a loyal fan base including actress Tilda Swinton, who regularly wears his designs to red carpet events. The fit seems perfect, as Haider, like Margiela, is a conceptual and cerebral designer. Apparently Raf Simons of Jil Sander was interviewed by the man himself as a possible successor, back in 2008, and it would appear that Haider has also had a meeting with him: 'When you meet the person you have admired for so many years, how can you possibly replace him? Sometimes it's better never to meet your heroes.' Hmm, but is he going to give it a try? While we’d be very sad to see MM leave, we’d like to see Haider finally getting the attention he deserves. Plus it would make for an amazing front row! [Fashionologie]
