Roksanda Ilincic

With a new high street collaboration under her very fashionable belt, designer Roksanda Ilincic is in high demand these days. And it seems we have none other than Yves Saint Laurent himself to thank. Aged just 11, the young Ilincic took such a fancy to her mother's YSL Rive Gauche dresses that she chopped them up herself. ‘"Let's make this shorter and tighter," was the thinking,' she says. ‘My mother was very, very upset.' Years later, she's now the proud owner of more than 100 examples of his work, and describes the designer's pieces as ‘from a different planet – a planet of beauty and elegance and things not related to reality.' Focusing strictly on the collections that Saint Laurent designed himself, Ilincic collects pieces only up until 1987 and explains that their vintage appeal transcends the practical side of clothes. ‘They're so much more than clothing... so the emotional value is more important than being able to wear them or not. Yves Saint Laurent's clothes have soul – every designer wants to achieve that.'
