His designs are old-school glamour, immaculately groomed. As are the women he dresses - everyone from Hillary Clinton to Catherine Zeta-Jones. So it's no surprise Oscar de la Renta is equally fastidious about the way he dresses every day. ‘I have to tell you that I've been dressing this way since I was a young man. I was 18-years-old when I arrived in Spain, and at that time you could have a custom-made suit for eight dollars,' he has explained about his light-gray custom-made suit, discreetly monogrammed shirt and tie held in place with a gold clip. ‘Do you know why I almost always wear a tie?' he adds. ‘I have this complex that if I walk into a place wearing a colourful shirt someone will stop me and say, "I'm sorry, but the Latin band comes through the other door."' And it sounds like Mr de la Renta has as strict views about the women he thinks of when creating his designs. ‘Let me tell you, it was never the ladies who lunch. They never lunched! They always wanted to stay thin.' That counts us out then... [Vanity Fair]
