Hussein Chalayan is a designer renowned for creating show-stopping catwalk moments. He's made tables that turned into skirts and put models in plastic dresses that morphed at the end of the catwalk. But now it seems the London-based designer has a more straightforward fashion project in the pipeline: collaborating on a range of jeans for J Brand. His three styles of designer denim are so far only being stocked in the US (who wants to start a petition to get them here?) but his collaboration has clearly got him thinking about other fashion hook-ups. And he's not always a fan. Chalayan has criticised celebrity fashion lines in the past and now he shares that he's especially ‘weirded-out by' the recent model-turned-designer phenomenon. ‘If you have a really strong sense of style and people want to aspire to being like you, I can understand that,' he says. ‘But if you really are doing it just because you think of yourself as a brand and you haven't had the training and you know nothing about clothes, it kind of demeans all the training that designers have had.' Back in 2008 he said it was ‘insulting' that Kate Moss was producing her own fashion line and it seems that's a view he's not afraid to share with anyone, even the supermodel herself. ‘I don't think it represented her, and I didn't think she worked hard enough,' he said recently. 'I even told her to her face. She said, "Oh, I'm just trying to do a light thing; I'm not trying to do anything serious,"' he recalls. ‘But I said, "That's not the point."' [WWD]
