Our friends at POP magazine are working very hard on their re-launch issue down the corridor from us. (Oh ok, in their own building but we like to pretend we could run in to gorgeous Editor-in-Chief Dasha Zhukova in the lift sometimes). They're reworking the iconic logo, handing out POP plimsolls to Lady Margaret Thatcher to use PowerPlating and shooting what look to be some fabulous fashion shoots. Sneak peek below. But in amongst their hard work Dasha took some time out to chat fashion and art with Derek Blasberg for Interview magazine. She revealed she initially faced resistance from going into the fashion industry with her clothing line Kova & T. ‘Actually I feel like anything I've ever done, I've been strongly advised not to do. It was more people telling me, "You don't want to get into this industry. You don't know what you're getting yourself into. You don't want to make this your future.' But make it her future she did when she took the role as Editor-in-Chief at POP, something she's very serious about. ‘I've wanted to do a magazine for years. In fact, my friend Olympia Scarry and I had worked on a magazine concept before. We did up a dummy version, and even looked to get it printed. It was not like Pop. We had only planned on a single issue a year, and the layout was different,' she says. ‘But when this opportunity came along – an entire magazine ready to go and fully staffed, with an entire infrastructure – eventually I decided it would be stupid not to at least entertain the idea.' She also thinks that splitting her time between the fashion and art world – she famously opened Moscow's modern art gallery The Garage last year – will be an advantage. ‘I read fashion magazines, but I'm not all up in the mix. I'm not from this world. I haven't spent years in fashion making friends and making enemies. I barely know who half the people are.' In fact she's aiming to make the magazine in her image. ‘I like to think of myself as the average reader,' she says. So does that mean the new POP's going to be gorgeous, glamorous and opulent? Guess so. [Interview, THEPOP]
The new issue of POP goes on sale on 3 September 2009.
