Didn't we tell you that 2009 was the year of the fashion-forward female muso? Well today's Mercury nominations have proved it, with the amazingly talented, ethereal Bat For Lashes getting her second nomination, while feisty Florence and the Machine and electro wunderkind La Roux's fab debut albums have earned them each a place on the list.

Friendly Fires, Glasvegas, Kasabian and The Horrors are among the other nominees, but we're hoping this year's winner is the proud owner of a pair of ‘X' chromosomes – after all, no woman has taken the prize since Ms Dynamite in 2002.

And at the very least we're expecting some amazing outfits at the ceremony on 8 September – we're thinking tribal face paint (Bat for Lashes), feathers aplenty (Florence) and androgynous suited'n'booted chic (La Roux). All of which makes a very nice change from the usual indie boys in cagoules. Go girls!
