Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen recognised for contribution to fashion

21 July 2009

There are few fashion accolades higher than being made a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Only 30 people make the cut every year. So our congratulations go to The Row and Elizabeth and James designers Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, who join the likes of Alexander Wang, and two of Michelle Obama's favourite designers, Jason Wu and Maria Pinto, on this year's list as those designers who have made a distinct impression on the fashion community this year. The selection, says CFDA executive director Steven Kolb, reflects the necessary change in attitude to the fast-paced nature of the industry, something president Diane Von Furstenberg is keen to emphasise: ‘Diane's whole approach to fashion and design is inclusiveness. She always refers to the CFDA as her extended family.' [WWD]
