Barbie becomes cover star of Vogue Italia

20 July 2009

Who knew that Barbie had such a hardcore fashion following. As she celebrates her 50th anniversary she's already had Roksanda Ilincic, Danielle Scutt and Henry Holland design and dress her, had a huge party in Dover Street Market thrown in her honour, inspired many a catwalk show, and now a whole issue of Vogue Italia has been dedicated to her.

Following the phenomenal success of last year's Black Issue, this month Vogue Italia are celebrating that success (and the anniversary) with a collector's supplement featuring only Barbie dolls. ‘Barbie has been an icon for whole generations which is why I really wanted to give a strong sign in step with the times, and dedicate the anniversary issue to Black Barbie," revealed editor-in-chief, Franca Sozzani. Barbie proves to be a very versatile model, looking just as at ease in synchronized swimming poses, as she does in Couture poses.

We suspect that this issue will also cause waiting lists and instant sell-outs to rival that of the Black Issue, for who else suddenly becomes the hottest face in fashion at the age of 50?
