Never content are we with the lovely designers that we have, we're always looking for somebody new. There is something so exciting about discovering new talent, long before anyone else has. Although thanks to Fashion East, Fashion Fringe and New Gen in the UK, they're spotting the next big thing before we can say ‘oh I like that'. Now the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) have announced a new list of talent, naming the 10 finalists for this year's CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award.
This year the nominees are womenswear designers; Flora Gill and Alexa Adams of Ohne Titel, Natalie Chanin of Alabama Chanin, Wayne Lee of Wayne, Sophie Theallet and Gary Graham; menswear designers Patrik Ervell and Simon Spurr of Spurr; cobbler George Esquivel of Esquivel Shoes; and jewellers Waris Ahluwalia of House of Waris, and Monique Péan. Remember those names because come this time next year, you might be wearing some of them, thanks to Gap's CFDA Design Editions project, where the winner and runners design a collection of clothing based on a set theme – this year it was khaki, last year white shirts.
This is the seventh year of the fund which awards the winner a cash prize and money-can't-buy mentorship. Previous winners and runners up have included Alexander Wang, Vera Cava, Proenza Schouler, Doo Ri, Phillip Lim, Thakoon, Derek Lam and Rodarte. It's a fine roll call and we will discover who will be joining them at the CFDA gala on 16 November.
