The big Serpentine summer bash

10 July 2009

The Serpentine summer party is the last big bash of the London social scene before everyone takes off on holiday. As a result it is always a proper party - think of it as a last day of school style blow-out with designer bling, and a crazy jumble of art, fashion, music and high society people getting on down. Dancing to a string of Michael Jackson hits on the lawn of the gallery in Hyde Park were Pharrell Williams, Damien Hirst, Dasha Zhukova, Erin O'Connor and, it also seemed, every botoxed blonde in London and her financier boyfriend. It wasn't the balmy summer night the organisers might have hoped for, most of the women in their barely-there dresses were shivering, but at least the rain held off! Unlikely pairings were everywhere: we saw the 60-something Marquis of Bath chatting up Natalie Imbruglia, Pharrell Williams nattering to Tess Daly, and Hussein Chalayan giving Damien Hirst a bear hug. The highlights of the evening came after 11pm when the champagne was in full effect and the embarrassing dancing began. No-one gave a darn about their bad-moves. They were having too much fun. And that is what makes a good party in our books. We're sure was a surge in sales of Nurofen this morning!
