The story of a troubled supermodel

02 July 2009

Who'd want to be a supermodel, hey? (And yes, we say that in all seriousness today.) Karen Mulder, who achieved cult fame on the catwalk in the 1990s as ‘The Blonde with Class', has just been released from prison in Paris this morning, having been arrested for allegedly making death threats to her plastic surgeon. The surgeon reportedly told police she was ‘extremely scared' after having been harassed by Mulder with ‘vicious' calls because she had refused to give her more Botox injections in her face. Apparently Mulder could ‘no longer bear the sight of her face in the mirror at night'. In the past, Mulder has admitted to depression and paranoia, prompting her to claim on French TV in 2001 that she had been raped by a conspiracy of police officers, politicians, members of her model agency and Prince Albert of Monaco. She has since apologised to Prince Albert. Now, old friend and catwalk partner Carla Bruni has been dragged into the case – as a direct comparison to how different the best friend's careers have turned out. Mulder is said to have always been jealous of Bruni's ability to reinvent herself so easily but sources close to Carla are insisting the former supermodel would have offered solace to Mulder.
