America gears up for tonight’s CFDA awards

15 June 2009

Spare a thought for those Americans who'll be rushing around as we type, trying on dresses, washing off their spray tans and prepping their hair. Because tonight New York hosts the CFDA awards – the US equivalent of the British Fashion Awards – otherwise known as the Oscars of the fashion industry. The Mulleavy sisters at Rodarte are fighting over champagne flutes with Narciso Rodriguez to walk away with the Womenswear Designer of the Year award. Marc Jacobs will be angling for a hat trick with his nominations as Womenswear Designer, Accessories Designer and International Award Winner. And we still can't decide who'll take the Swarovski Award for Womenswear between Thakoon, Jason Wu and Alexander Wang. Though we do quite like playing this game to test our knowledge of the CFDA nominees' style... But it's not all about the winners. We're also interested in the presenters – and what they'll wear on the red carpet. Jack White from The White Stripes will present Anna Sui with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, Diane Kruger will present the Womenswear Designer of the Year award and Blake Lively will be Michael Kors's date (wearing one of his dresses naturally) and presenting the Swarovski awards. Well, at least Blake's got her red carpet outfit sorted. Rachel Zoe still hasn't decided – but reckons she'll wear Louis Vuitton as a tribute to Marc Jacobs – and one New York fashionista is having to do a last minute change after her crash dress diet didn't quite work out! Check back here tomorrow morning for the winners, dresses and news from America's biggest night in fashion...
