Central Saint Martins fashion show: ONE TO WATCH

Bird Box bum-bags, television screens on dresses, skipping models and Grayson Perry - it must be the Central Saint Martins BA fashion show!  Forty students showed their wares on the catwalk in East London, watched by Gareth Pugh, Daphne Guinness, Peter Jensen and loads of ex students, glowing tutors and proud parents. The show of the renowned college is where design houses could discover their next employee, talent scouts find the next Christopher Kane and we find our One to Watch...

Alexander Ruth was the second collection to hit the catwalk and immediately got the audience to sit up and take notice. His sensitive use of colour, print and texture made us think of Margiela (always a good thing), the styling was refined (even better) and the shapes were wearable, but really interesting and original.

Of course there was lots of plinky-plonky music that made our ears sting, outfits that would be more at home on cartoon characters or in Lord of the Rings or in the circus, and experimental fabrics that looked difficult to stand in, let alone sit down in, but that's the nature of graduate shows. Although we would have liked a couple more collections that made us think ‘ooh, that's nice, I'd wear that!'
