Michelle Obama has made US designers Thakoon, Isabel Toledo, Maria Cornejo and Jason Wu household names – well, they are in our houses anyway. But has she had the same effect on the Brits? In February Mrs O stepped out in a Jonathan Saunders dress, accessorized with a Richard Nicoll for Erickson Beamon brooch, then earlier this month she chose to wear Basso and Brooke to ‘An Evening of Poetry, Music and the Spoken Word'. All the pieces had been picked up from Ikram in Chicago, but what effect does it have on the designers?

‘To have her wear Jonathan Saunders has a huge impact for the business not just in the US but worldwide,' revealed Jonathan whose label is going stellar on both sides of the Atlantic. And on hearing that he was the first British label the First Lady chose to wear: ‘If I am the first then I am very honoured! There is no woman more in the spotlight at the moment than Michelle Obama, whose every fashion choice is watched globally.'

Meanwhile, Basso and Brooke were delighted to see Michelle getting crafy with her own interpretation of a dress from their S/S '09 collection. ‘By adding her own personal touch, by making our dress into a blouse, she created an individual edge - cementing her status as a style icon,' the designers explained. ‘Michelle is such a strong, stylish female and is redefining a woman's wardrobe.' So which British brands will Michelle Obama wear next? We'd like to see her in a bit of Burberry or fashioning it up in some Christopher Kane. Oh, and then there are those rumours Ikram Goldman has been looking at Meadham Kirchhoff...
