WATCH the Chanel Cruise show in Venice!

15 May 2009

The Chanel press office had been worried about the breezy weather forecast for the Chanel Cruise 2010 show in Venice last night, but they need not have done: the setting was perfect. As the sun set on the Lido, the only thing guests had to worry about was how to stop their heels sinking into the sand (it had taken three weeks to import the 10 tonnes of sand needed to level the beach) and how to balance their Bellinis on the arms of deckchairs. Then the show began: models, including one of the original supermodels Tatjana Patitz, processed down a catwalk made of wooden slats, to look like a seaside boardwalk, set against the original beach cabins. The theme was Visconti's gorgeous movie, Death In Venice. The models wore wigs inspired by one of the city's most famous residents, Peggy Guggenheim. And, as you'd expect, there were some classically chic, yet super-wearable, pieces: the perfect suit with a cream bouclé jacket with fringed edges, a simple column of black knit jersey dress and a standout blood-red satin shirt dress with full knee-length skirt. After Karl Lagerfeld took to the catwalk to end a truly show-stopping fashion moment, it was off to party. Sequinned jackets seemed to be the order of the night as the fashion folk danced under the stars until the early hours. Let me tell you, getting on a motor boat to the airport this morning was a difficult experience...
