When fashion and politics collide…

11 May 2009

Washington put aside talk of the economic crisis for the evening on Saturday night, as the A-list came to town for the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner. And, as you'd expect when dressing up for the President and his fashion icon wife, the Hollywood glitterati, hard-hitting politicos and fashion heavyweights, didn't disappoint. Natalie Portman worked a 2004 Balenciaga number, Demi Moore came over all Grecian in Versace, Katie Holmes showcased one of her own designs and First Lady Michelle Obama stuck to her sleeveless guns in a simple fuchsia Michael Kors shift, prompting the President to make one of his best quips of the night. ‘She has helped to bridge the differences that have divided us for so long because no matter which party you belong to, we can all agree that Michelle has the right to bear arms.' Does a career in stand-up beckon, Barack? The fashion crowd clearly approved. Donatella Versace said the bash was ‘much better' than last year and Jason Wu was pleased to finally get the chance to meet Michelle Obama - the woman who basically launched his career into overdrive by wearing his dress for the Inauguration Ball. Meanwhile most random moment of the night goes to Ashton Kutcher who tweeted: ‘Demi claims Obama gave her the "what's up" smile. Meanwhile all I got was the "who farted?" squint during the dinner.' Nice... Check out our gallery of the best dressed below.
