Desirée Rogers: The White House fashion power house

Michelle Obama might have been front and centre at Saturday's Hollywood-comes-to-Washington gala, but it was the woman standing behind her that the A-list rushed to greet. Desirée Rogers, the White House Social Secretary – aka woman in charge of who gets on the party guest lists – and current fashion powerhouse of DC. Consistently great at doing dressed-down chic but also an expert at high octane fashion, we reckon she's threatening to steal Michelle's fashion crown. Here's why...

Her fashion choices cause (almost) as much of a frenzy as Michelle's. Reporters swooped on Desirée to find out where her Sari Gueron black floor-length ball gown was from at the first black tie event at the White House, the Governor's ball. Such is the furore over what she wears, she declined to give her fashion credits for the pink dress she wore at the weekend.

In fact, Desirée so en Vogue she made a guest appearance in the pages of US Vogue the month before Michelle Obama graced the publication's cover.

As if to prove she's besties with Anna Wintour, Desirée was then spotted sitting next to her on the front row of the Thakoon show last New York Fashion Week.

Her NY FW appearance proved too that she's allowed to go where it would be considered inappropriate for the First Lady herself to be seen. Take, for example, this month's CFDA Awards in New York – the equivalent to the British Fashion Awards. Desirée is picking up Michelle Obama's honorary award for services to American fashion on behalf of the First Lady (and no doubt hobnobbing with the fashion set at the same time).
