Five minutes with… Jonathan Kelsey

08 May 2009

He's just designed his very first handbag in conjunction with singer Estelle and Belvedere, he's one of the hottest shoe designers around, and he's obsessed with Marc by Marc Jacobs polo shirts. So we took five minutes to catch up with Jonathan Kelsey and get his take on all things fashwan...

So, give us the definitive answer: are extreme heels over? No. It's true that people have pushed shoe design further than ever before, but really it's a question of offering variety, so that you can buy a super-high showpiece or a cute, wearable heel depending on what you want/like.

What was it like working with Estelle? Why did you choose her? I was out for a drink with her last night actually! She's lovely, down-to-earth and very funny. We wanted someone talented with a fun, adventurous sense of style, so she fitted the bill perfectly.

Was it strange designing the ‘Belvie' bag compared to shoes? It was! Quite a different thing to tackle, but I picked it up quickly and loved doing it.

Sexiest part of a shoe? The confidence it gives the girl.

Three tips for walking in high heels? Practise, no running, and don't get too pissed

Dirty fashion secret? I'm obsessed with this Marc by Marc Jacobs polo shirt. I have it in all 12 colours and wear them all the time.

What's inspiring you right now? Egypt... and the film Stargate...

You did a shoe inspired by Amy Winehouse. How do you feel about that now? I love it. And I can't wait to hear her new album.

And is there anyone else you would like to design in homage to? My new winter collection is all about Siouxsie Sioux and Joan Jett.

Any shoe designers you currently have your eye on? I think Nick Kirkwood's very talented, and I like Jerome Rousseau too.

Any plans to move into womenswear? No. I'm an accessories kinda guy.

Did you go to the Met Ball? What were the best and weirdest moments for you? I couldn't go as I was launching the handbag in NY, but I have to say that outfit Rihanna wore was pretty spectacular!

Last three things you bought? A grey jacket from Topman, an apple and Grazia.

Aww, we love you too Jonathan, but if you want to get your hands on the exclusive and limited-edition ‘Belvie' bag, you'd better run down to the pop up store on London's Mount Street now. It's only open until the end of the day!
