What’s new at Whistles!

07 May 2009

We're always excited to see what Jane Shepherdson has in store for us, and if the Whistles press day was anything to go by, this A/W '09 it's about super-cool leather, sharp tailoring, the perfect dresses, oversized knits and the kind of winter coats that will make fashion-envious folk stop you in the street  and demand to know where you got it. But the big talking point was the new range of accessories, the first big collection since Jane joined the company, designed by ex-Mulberry designer, Sally Turner, who has also worked with Roksanda Ilinicic, Kim Jones, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Topshop and Liberty. ‘As with the clothing we want to make great stuff that girls just really want to have,' Sally told us of the accessories. ‘We use the best materials and world class tanneries.' Indeed they do, as when a soft- as-butter leather bag covered in zips landed in the Grazia office last week everyone wanted one, even more so when we realised that it was Whistles and not an off-the-budget designer. And there were loads more goodies where that came from. Rings looking like pencil sharpeners,  large pencils on chain necklaces and bracelets, and pencil key-rings. So are these quirky details a preview of what will be big in accessories come the chill? ‘In bags, it's all about close-up detail and luxe materials – a great bag does not have to scream to be heard. But in jewellery, it's the opposite. It's all about the blatantly obvious.' You don't need to tell us twice to pile it on...
