Looks like the Bank Holiday weekend wasn't all rest and relaxation for those busy designers Stateside, because Sunday afternoon saw the likes of Maria Cornejo, Thakoon Panichgul and Narciso Rodriguez come out in defence of the First Lady's style. ‘She shocks. She looks at collections and fashion shows I guess like everyone else does. She picks what she likes and she wears it,' Rodriguez said. But what about a certain Mr Oscar de la Renta's recent criticism of the First Lady's decision to stay away from more established designers? ‘That was outrageous,' Rodriguez continued. ‘How dare anybody tell the First Lady or any woman today what they should be wearing?' Thakoon and Maria Cornejo meanwhile, neither of whom has actually met Mrs O in person, were positively gushing in their appreciation of their new-found fame: 'She is giving a lot of people like myself the chance to be seen,' said Maria Cornejo, while Thakoon admitted he'd originally made the floral dress Michelle wore to meet Carla Bruni last month for the Inauguration, but failed to line it in wool to take account of the cold weather. Better luck next time, Thakoon. Mind you, with compliments like this, we won't be surprised when the First Lady reaches for her old faithfulls from the back of her wardrobe... [WWD]
