Fashion’s DIY £2.40 accessory

05 May 2009

As if the daily dose of stars stepping out in Balmain jackets isn't enough to prove the show-off shoulder is back and bigger than ever, the round of high street press days last week showed it's here to stay well into next season. Shoulder pads have found their way into cocktail dresses at Oasis, biker jackets at Topshop and even plain white tees at ASOS. And it seems the shoulder pad trend is one you can't wait to see hit the shops to buy into. According to department store faithful John Lewis, shoulder pad sales are up. Ed Connolly, Buyer of Haberdashery and Fashion Fabrics, told us sales of £2.40 shoulder pads and other DIY haberdashery accoutrements have already marched up by 10%. How so? Rather than drop £3K on an even-Beyonce's-wearing-one Balmain jacket, savvy stylistas are shopping their closets, adding and adapting at will. (We even saw one top fashion editor sticking shoulder pads in her jacket every day during Paris Fashion Week). A statement zip here, a snazzy trim there and a whole lot of shoulder paddery pretty much everywhere, equals a host of new ways to zhuzh up last summer's poppy-print tea dress. We're off to experiment!
