Stella McCartney is Time's most influential fashion designer

To find yourself ranked in Time magazine's list of the top 100 of the world's most influential people is a massive achievement. So imagine how Stella McCartney felt when she found herself positioned alongside Barack and Michelle Obama, Gordon Brown, the Twitter boys, plus 95 other high-fliers, head honchos and chiefs. Delighted we're sure. But imagine how she felt when she realised that she was the only representative of the fashion industry in the list. Nope, there was no sign of Anna Wintour, John Galliano, Francois Pinault or even Sir Phillip Green, who just brought his Topshop empire to New York... Just Stella left to hold the fort. Listed as a ‘Builder or Titan', her recommendation came from best friend and regular Stella McCartney clothes horse Gwyneth Paltrow. Although her odd testimonial did seem to pay more attention to Stella's vegetarianism than to her fashion credentials. ‘You cannot accurately characterize Stella McCartney, 37, without underlining that she is a vegetarian,' wrote Gwyn. ‘Always has been. And even if you are not interested in being a vegetarian, somehow Stella gets you to believe. She manages to convince you (never sanctimoniously, never from a soapbox) that killing animals is needless and cruel and bad for the environment. It may last the duration of just one dinner, but you start to feel a bit sad for your neighbour's lamb and a bit embarrassed by your chicken.' Yes, OK, thanks Ms Paltrow, but remember Stella really does make some lovely clothes too!
