The only place to be yesterday was the new Michael Kors shop on Bond St where the designer held court over afternoon tea that became cocktails and then segued into dinner. Today he flies back to NY to prepare for the Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum, one of the hottest tickets on the NY social calendar. At $5,000 a plate, it is also one of the most exclusive. This year, the theme is The Model As A Muse and Michael was planning to take Lauren Hutton as his guest of honour. Then the former supermodel had a surfing accident, ripping her ligaments when a teenage surfer ran into her knee in Hawaii, throwing her attendance into jeopardy. So we were happy to hear Michael confirm last night that Lauren will go to the ball - along with some other special guests. ‘She is an American fashion icon and my greatest inspiration,' the designer told us. ‘She should have been here to celebrate the shop opening with me but after her little surfing accident she is indisposed. She was advised not to fly. Hopefully, however, she will be fit enough to manage the steps of the Met with me on Monday night. She just writes her own rules. She negotiates treacherous fashion territory with ease. No one can do the totally lived-in look like she can and make every other woman in the room want to look just like her.' Michael will be bookended at the event by the women who epitomise his simple but impeccably glossy glamour. ‘If Lauren is where it all started, then Carmen Kass is where it is right now. She is typical of a new customer that is incredibly refined.' Also joining Michael and his models is a muse: Mad Men's January Jones (who plays Betty Draper). The designer based his S/S '09 collection on the TV show and the actress is honouring him by making a flying visit from the set to New York. She has to return at 6am the next morning! Check out the best dressed from last night's party below.
