Sarah Brown had to RENT her G20 wardrobe

Spare a thought for Sarah Brown. As if planning a wardrobe that could withstand the constant comparisons that came from standing next to Michelle Obama wasn't hard enough, it turns out she had to rent her own clothes for the G20 summit in London last week. Yes, rent. Sarah has no income of her own, as she was forced to give up her high-profile PR job when her husband became Chancellor. She is not allowed to receive gifts, nor to borrow clothes, even for an official summit. So the only option left for the Prime Minister's wife to deck herself out in anything other than M&S or New Look, was for her to rent her outfits. Sarah paid hundreds of her own pounds to rent the Graeme Black jacket (above left, which can retail for up to £9,000) and an Amanda Wakeley dress to avoid being pilloried by the public and press alike for failing to live up to Michelle Obama's fashion example. Discovering this makes us want to take a moment out of this Mrs O mania to salute Sarah Brown's fashion nous – remember how she worked with Graeme Black to customise a catwalk look for US Congress last month? – and remind her it's more than OK to wear the same thing twice.
