She has been threatening it for some time, what with her celebrating her 50th birthday with a New York catwalk show and a Parisian party, but finally Barbie, resplendent in a jewel-encrusted Barbie Cadillac (worth £90,000 apparently), arrived in London last night. It was Dover Street Market to be precise where she celebrated with a collection of Barbie clothes by Jeremy Scott and Barbie dolls dressed by Roksanda Ilincic, Danielle Scutt and a Ken doll by Gareth Pugh.
Henry Holland kindly hosted the party, inviting some of his bestest friends including Jade Parfitt (wearing one of Henry's A/W '09 designs), Nick Grimshaw, Miquita Oliver, Stephen Jones and Peaches Geldof – who arrived only after all the rosé champagne was drunk, the last glitter-topped mini cupcake was eaten and everyone was heading off into the night. The only person missing was supermodel Agyness Deyn. Henry's best mate and perennial catwalk model jetted into the capital this weekend but was a no-show last night much to the London fashion set's dismay.
Still, the shop was packed, so much so that tall glass cabinets wobbled with the weight of the crowd leaning against them, but thankfully no disasters. Well, other than the usual goody-bag etiquette – collect on departure, be very grateful and a little bit surprised – went out the window as the party crowd realised there were limited numbers of the Barbie dolls to be given away. Instead everyone tried to collect their Cher, Bikini, Grease or Batgirl Barbie at the beginning of the evening, so there were none left when the party was over. ‘I want a Barbie!' grown men were shouting. ‘I want to add her to my collection!' As girls and boys dressed as their plastic idol in pink lipstick, pink shoes and big blonde hair disappeared into the night, it was obvious that Barbie won't be leaving London any time soon!
