Michelle Obama’s causing fashion controversy

08 April 2009

Some have claimed Michelle Obama is single-handedly saving the failing American fashion industry, but it looks like Oscar de la Renta isn't in that camp. First the designer criticised her for wearing a cardigan to meet the Queen and now he's hit out at the First Lady for choosing European designers to tour around, er, well Europe. ‘American fashion right now is struggling. I think I understand what [Obama and her advisers] are doing, but I don't think that is the right message at this particular point . . . I don't object to the fact that Mrs. Obama is wearing J.Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there. I think it's wrong to go in one direction only.' Hmmm... It might just be because we're still suffering from Michelle mania here, but doesn't Oscar - the designer who has traditionally dressed First Ladies including Hilary Clinton and Barbara Bush - just sound like he's a little jealous Mrs O hasn't swung by his studio yet? Somehow we don't think she will now... [Fashionologie]
